Make Mousey The Junkbot!

Facts on Robotics

1. “Robot” has derived from the Czech word “robota”, which means “drudgery”. At first it was seen in the play Rossum’s Universal Robots in the year 1921.

2. The case of a first robot homicide took place in the year 1981. It was the first case which is known to us. In the incident a factory worker of Japanese Kawasaki was crushed by a robotic arm.

3. Nowadays there are millions of industrial robots in use and about half of them are in Japan alone.

4. In the year 1495, Leonardo da Vinci had also drawn plans of a shielded humanoid machine.

5. PackBot’s is a manufacturer of iRobot which was already sold over two million Roomba robotic vacuum cleaners, which also has an environment sensing techniques available in it.

6. There is a report that the Taliban fighters of Afghanistan have used ladders in order to turn over and disarmed the military robots which was being sent to check out their caves.

7. Elektro is the first humanoid robot in the world which was debuted in the year 1939. It was created by the Westinghouse. It was 7 foot in height and was able to walk and speak. It spoke over seven hundred words which was stored in it.

8. Chris Melhuish from Bristol Robotics Lab has created a robot which can use fuel cells with bacteria in order to obtain electricity from the objects like the dead flies and the rotten apples. The main goal behind this was that robots could seek the need of their own food.

9. A group of Australian researchers are finding a way to build up a micro robot that could perform the same swim stroke which is used by E. coli bacteria. The main goal behind this is that if it becomes successful, it will be very much helpful in taking a biopsy of the human body parts.

The Model M3X-3S-Twin CNC Kneemill Offers Twice the Production

Versatile design. Solid support.
The System M3X-3S Twin CNC Kneemill is designed to produce single or few tool-change parts in medium to large quantities for less than the cost of a single VMC. You can quote jobs on a single spindle, and then run them on 2, doubling your speed (and profit!). You can also make money on jobs that can’t be cost-justified on expensive VMCs.
System M3X controls are shipped completely installed and tested. You can be up and running the day your machine arrives. If you can run a manual machine, you will be cutting chips in less than 2 hours. If you can run a CNC mill, it will take less!

CNC Machines

The System M3X / M4X CNC Control

The System M3X Control was designed from the ground up with the machine operator in mind. The ease of use and reliability of design will reward you with years of profitable use.
With our Conversational Programming System (Also available as a standalone version.) The casual machine operator will be up and running right away. By using easy text driven machine events you can make a single cut or a complete part without G-Code experience.
For the more experienced machinist and large production facilities you'll appreciate the full control that comes with the G-Code library support and the the no-nonsense control panel design. The optional 4th axis synchronous rotary table can be used for simple indexing to complex contour work, and at a price that doesn't buy the software alone with most of the other guys.

Standard on all M3X Controls

Using the remote pendant station the operator will breeze through part and tool setups. This feature makes setup a snap. With the M3X you get this "big machine" option as standard equipment.
With the large character DRO you won't have any problem seeing the current position (Displayed to the 1/10,000). You can preset the axis to any value then cut away. Let's face it, some jobs are just faster to cut by hand, when looking for a retrofit make sure you retain manual control of all axis, especially the quill.

Robotics

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a robot?

For many people it is a machine that imitates a human—like the androids in Star Wars, Terminator and Star Trek: The Next Generation. However much these robots capture our imagination, such robots still only inhabit Science Fiction. People still haven't been able to give a robot enough 'common sense' to reliably interact with a dynamic world. However, Rodney Brooks and his team at MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab are working on creating such humanoid robots.

The type of robots that you will encounter most frequently are robots that do work that is too dangerous, boring, onerous, or just plain nasty. Most of the robots in the world are of this type. They can be found in auto, medical, manufacturing and space industries. In fact, there are over a million of these type of robots working for us today.

Some robots like the Mars Rover Sojourner and the upcoming Mars Exploration Rover, or the underwater robot Caribou help us learn about places that are too dangerous for us to go. While other types of robots are just plain fun for kids of all ages. Popular toys such as Teckno, Polly or AIBO ERS-220 seem to hit the store shelves every year around Christmas time.

And as much fun as robots are to play with, robots are even much more fun to build. In Being Digital, Nicholas Negroponte tells a wonderful story about an eight year old, pressed during a televised premier of MITMedia Lab's LEGO/Logo work at Hennigan School. A zealous anchor, looking for a cute sound bite, kept asking the child if he was having fun playing with LEGO/Logo. Clearly exasperated, but not wishing to offend, the child first tried to put her off. After her third attempt to get him to talk about fun, the child, sweating under the hot television lights, plaintively looked into the camera and answered, "Yes it is fun, but it's hard fun."

But what exactly is a robot?

As strange as it might seem, there really is no standard definition for a robot. However, there are some essential characteristics that a robot must have and this might help you to decide what is and what is not a robot. It will also help you to decide what features you will need to build into a machine before it can count as a robot.

A robot has these essential characteristics:
Sensing First of all your robot would have to be able to sense its surroundings. It would do this in ways that are not unsimilar to the way that you sense your surroundings. Giving your robot sensors: light sensors (eyes), touch and pressure sensors (hands), chemical sensors (nose), hearing and sonar sensors (ears), and taste sensors (tongue) will give your robot awareness of its environment.
Movement A robot needs to be able to move around its environment. Whether rolling on wheels, walking on legs or propelling by thrusters a robot needs to be able to move. To count as a robot either the whole robot moves, like the Sojourner or just parts of the robot moves, like the Canada Arm.
Energy A robot needs to be able to power itself. A robot might be solar powered, electrically powered, battery powered. The way your robot gets its energy will depend on what your robot needs to do.
Intelligence A robot needs some kind of "smarts." This is where programming enters the pictures. A programmer is the person who gives the robot its 'smarts.' The robot will have to have some way to receive the program so that it knows what it is to do.

So what is a robot?

Well it is a system that contains sensors, control systems, manipulators, power supplies and software all working together to perform a task. Designing, building, programming and testing a robots is a combination of physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, structural engineering, mathematics and computing. In some cases biology, medicine, chemistry might also be involved. A study of robotics means that students are actively engaged with all of these disciplines in a deeply problem-posing problem-solving environment.

Programs

Solidworks

SolidWorks is a 3D mechanical CAD (computer-aided design) program that runs on Microsoft Windows and is being developed by Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks Corp., a subsidiary of Dassault Systèmes, S. A. (Vélizy, France). SolidWorks is currently used by over 1.3 million engineers and designers at more than 130,000 companies worldwide. FY2009 revenue for SolidWorks, was 366 million dollars

Autocad
AutoCAD is a CAD (Computer Aided Design or Computer Aided Drafting) software application for 2D and 3D design and drafting. It was developed and sold by Autodesk, Inc. First released in December 1982, AutoCAD was one of the first CAD programs to run on personal computers, notably the IBM PC. At that time, most other CAD programs ran on mainframe computers or mini-computers which were connected to a graphics computer terminal for each user.

Early releases of AutoCAD used primitive entities — lines, polylines, circles, arcs, and text — to construct more complex objects. Since the mid-1990s, AutoCAD has supported custom objects through its C++ Application Programming Interface (API). Modern AutoCAD includes a full set of basic solid modeling and 3D tools. With the release of AutoCAD 2007 came improved 3D modeling, which meant better navigation when working in 3D. Moreover, it became easier to edit 3D models. The mental ray engine was included in rendering, it was now possible to do quality renderings. AutoCAD 2010 introduced parametric functionality and mesh modeling.

AutoCAD supports a number of APIs for customization and automation. These include AutoLISP, Visual LISP, VBA, .NET and ObjectARX. ObjectARX is a C++ class library, which was also the base for products extending AutoCAD functionality to specific fields, to create products such as AutoCAD Architecture, AutoCAD Electrical, AutoCAD Civil 3D, or third-party AutoCAD-based applications.

AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT are available for English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Russian, Czech, Polish, Hungarian, Brazilian Portuguese, Danish, Dutch, Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian, and Vietnamese. The extent of localization varies from full translation of the product to documentation only. The AutoCAD command set is localized as a part of the software localization.

Matlab
MATLAB (for matrix laboratory) is a numerical computing environment and fourth-generation programming language. Developed by MathWorks, MATLAB allows matrix manipulations, plotting of functions and data, implementation of algorithms, creation of user interfaces, and interfacing with programs written in other languages, including C, C++, and Fortran.

Although MATLAB is intended primarily for numerical computing, an optional toolbox uses the MuPAD symbolic engine, allowing access to symbolic computing capabilities. An additional package, Simulink, adds graphical multi-domain simulation and Model-Based Design for dynamic and embedded systems.

In 2004, MATLAB had around one million users across industry and academia.[2] MATLAB users come from various backgrounds of engineering, science, and economics. MATLAB is widely used in academic and research institutions as well as industrial enterprises.
